The East squad’s 31–27 victory over the West was their first win since 2015 and was the highest-scoring Shrine Bowl since 2006!
The East was led by Tampa Bay Buccaneers inside linebackers coach Mike Caldwell while the West was led by Atlanta Falcons offensive assistant coach Ben Steele.
In the first quarter, the East scored on a 9-yard touchdown pass from Florida International quarterback James Morgan to Louisiana Lafayette receiver Ja’Marcus Bradley. They pushed their lead to 14–0 on a 10-yard touchdown run by UNC Charlotte running back Benny LeMay at the 5:12 mark of the first quarter.
The West started their scoring at the end of the first quarter on a fourth-down pass from Utah quarterback Tyler Huntley to San Diego State tight end Parker Houston.
Both teams kicked a field goal and ended the half with the East leading 17–10.
In the third quarter, Illinois State safety Luther Kirk intercepted a Mississippi State quarterback Tommy Stevens pass. The West took advantage of the moment when North Texas quarterback Mason Fine found Ohio State wide receiver Binjimen Victor on a 36-yard touchdown, bringing the score to 17–17.
East receiver Malcolm Perry from Navy, took the direct snap and sprinted 52 yards for the score, securing a 24–20 lead in the fourth quarter.
With eight minutes left in the fourth, Illinois State running back James Robinson from the West took the handoff and ran 63 yards to score, the longest touchdown run in Shrine Bowl history, to give the West a 27–24 lead.
A few plays later, Benny LeMay ran into the end zone securing the win for the East in a 31–27 victory.
The next step for a lot of these players before the NFL Draft is to head to the NFL Combine where college football players perform physical and mental tests in front of National Football League coaches, general managers and scouts.
